Lack of health care drives down East Tennessee COVID vaccinations

I m seeing that a lot, said Pierce.
Individual attitudes regarding the COVID-19 vaccine are important but less important than the physical barriers to health care.
These trends point to an all-too familiar problem. East Tennessee’s unequal distribution of health care resources and infrastructure which already damage the health of Tennesseans here in innumerable ways hurt even more in a global pandemic.
Addressing these inequalities will require a multipronged approach in the short term and investment in the health of vulnerable communities in the long term, experts say.
Bringing down barriers
People in rural or vulnerable counties are at greater risk of living far from emergency care centers and overall have less access to primary care.

Nuclear workers plagued by leukaemia, cancers and other illnesses

Nuclear workers plagued by leukaemia, cancers and other illnesses
Some workers developed cancer, leukemia and other illnesses. The same held true for workers at other nuclear facilities across the nation.
The number of potentially eligible workers across the nation is uncertain. Likewise, the number of employees potentially affected at West Valley could be in the thousands when accounting for temporary workers.
“This was particularly troubling if the same workers were hired repeatedly as temporaries and received high doses each time,”
In addition, the exposure of growing numbers of individuals increased the possibility of genetic consequences for the entire population.”
Federal program has paid former employees $20.3 million in compensation. Other claims are pending and still more workers are unaware of the program.

West Valley nuclear waste site continues to impact former workers

Tucked away in the hills of Cattaraugus County, a the former Nuclear Fuel Services reprocessing facility is generally out-of-sight and out-of-mind for most Western New Yorkers. It s a different story for those who worked there. Opened in 1966, the facility handled over 630 tons of radioactive fuel during its short life. Phil Gambini of Investigative Post has taken a closer look at how workers have been impacted and how they could be helped.
