Planners tout bus rapid transit from Downtown to the Northwest Side

Planners for a new transportation system for major corridors in Franklin County are recommending a bus rapid transit line to link Downtown Columbus with the Northwest Side.
The LinkUS transportation initiative, a collaboration between the city of Columbus, the Central Ohio Transit Authority and the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, has scheduled virtual public meetings for noon and 6 p.m. Wednesday for those interested in listening and weighing in with ideas. Bus rapid transit, or BRT, is being recommended because it is less expensive than light rail. Such a system has dedicated lanes with state-of-the-art, Wi-Fi-equipped buses that can carry more passengers. Greater Cleveland RTA estimates that it will receive $60 million from the latest federal coronavirus aid package.

CLEVELAND, Ohio Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority expects to receive $60 million from the federal coronavirus relief package signed into law in December and plans to use the money to offset operational costs.
The money is in addition to $111 million in federal aid provided to RTA in April from the Coronavirus Response & Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act, which was the first federal COVID-19 aid package.
RTA’s $60 million comprises the largest portion of $74.6 million allocated to the region’s transit agencies, RTA Budget Director Kay Satula said during a Tuesday meeting. ....

CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority announced it will close its downtown offices on January 20 out an an abundance of caution.
The RTA cited the cityâs decision to close its downtown buildings in response to social unrest on inauguration day, according to an GCRTA press release.
âWe have not received any credible threats from local, state and federal authorities at this time,â according to the release. ....
