JOHNSTOWN Johnstown Public Library officials say Librarian Robert Weatherby couldn’t have come at a better time for the facility both before and after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Now the 38 S. Market St. library and its patrons are waiting like everyone for things to get back to normal, but one gets the feeling Weatherby will keep plugging away.
“We love Robert,” says April Meyer, whose two children are part of a Dungeons & Dragons online group run by Weatherby. ....

JOHNSTOWN Dr. Brandon Beck of Westchester County thinks everyone literally every human being walking the face of the Earth has untapped potential.
And the 2000 Johnstown High School graduate hopes his new book that’s currently climbing up the Amazon charts helps them realize that. Mixed with stories of famous people and personal anecdotes, the publication is catching people’s attention.
“I try to cast as wide a net net as possible,” the 39-year-old Beck says.
In December, the Sleepy Hollow teacher published his first book “Unlocking Unlimited Potential.” Beck is currently a fifth grade dual language English teacher for the Ossining Union Free School District. He is also a professor at Manhattanville College’s Foundation of Bilingual Education. ....

GJSD public referendum scheduled for May | News, Sports, Jobs

JOHNSTOWN The Greater Johnstown School District Board of Education on Thursday authorized a public referendum in May to reduce the number of its board members from nine to seven.
The board passed a resolution to allow voters to downscale the board via a proposition at the district’s annual election May 18. If approved, the change wouldn’t take effect until May 2022.
Board President Christopher Tallon indicated that three volunteer board members’ seats are up this year and two of them might not be running for reelection. They are: Ronald Beck, Susanne Fitzgerald and Kathryn Zajicek.
The Johnstown school board in recent years has had a problem finding persons in the community interested in running. Still, Tallon put the word out Thursday. ....

IDA monitoring PILOT payments | News, Sports, Jobs

JOHNSTOWN The Fulton County Industrial Development Agency board recently reviewed a 2020 Payment In Lieu of Taxes, or PILOT report.
“Each year, we monitor the PILOTs,” said IDA Executive Director James Mraz. “We have to make sure the companies are making the payments we require them to make.”
The agency board monitors all PILOT agreements it has on projects to verify that PILOT payments are being made per the agreements. Each year, the IDA sends a letter to every company it has a PILOT with asking that they fill out a PILOT report. The IDA also sends a similar letter to all local taxing jurisdictions impacted by an IDA PILOT. The information from local taxing jurisdictions is used to compare against the information received from companies. ....

Cooperstown School District Names New Superintendent

Cooperstown School District Names New Superintendent
Cooperstown Central School District has named Sarah Spross as the new district superintendent. According to school district officials, Spross comes to Cooperstown from the State of Maryland Department of Education where she is an assistant superintendent. She succeeds William Crankshaw who left last summer to become superintendent of the Greater Johnstown School District. Spross is a Dutchess County native and has been an educator for more than 25 years. Her start date is to be no later than March 1.
