Rural areas outpace Maine tourism centers in Memorial Day travel

Memorial Day weekend travel rebounded significantly in Maine in 2021, but it remained short of pre-pandemic levels with rural gains offset by dips in coastal tourism centers amid international travel restrictions and lingering virus concerns.



Just over 330,000 vehicles crossed the Piscataqua River Bridge between Friday and Monday, according to data from the Maine Department of Transportation. ....

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - The recent announcement from the Mills Administration about the lifting of many COVID-19 restrictions starting next week appears to be paving the way for an economic return to normal.
“Reservations were up to begin with, and now, this has kicked it into another gear,” said Kerrie Tripp, executive director of the Greater Bangor Convention and Visitors Bureau
Tripp says the announcement from the governor has lead to a shift in how people are making their plans.
“Has definitely made that switch from we are thinking about coming to Maine to, hey, we are coming on these days. What is going on, and what can you recommend for us to do? We’re helping people plan their vacation while they are in the region. That is a noticeable shift for us, and that is really exciting,” Tripp said. ....

As rules loosen, Maine's hospitality industry still needs 'one more step to get there'


Maine s tourism and hospitality industries welcome the looser travel and capacity restrictions announced by Gov. Janet Mills Friday, but still have immediate challenges in order to make ends meet this summer, industry leaders said.

AUGUSTA, Maine Maine Gov. Janet Mills on Friday announced loosened coronavirus-related travel restrictions and a reopening plan to boost tourism ahead of the spring and summer.
