United Way to Distribute National Grid Foundation Utility Aid to Haverhill and Lawrence Families

The National Grid Foundation recently awarded United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley a $250,000 grant to help local families in need pay for utilities this winter.
United Way will distribute the funds to 16 community-based organizations serving several communities hard hit by the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis, including Haverhill and Lawrence. Community Action of Haverhill, Greater Lawrence Community Action Council and Lawrence CommunityWorks will receive a total of $50,000 to assist local residents.
“The loss of income created financial setbacks impacting the ability of many hourly workers to pay for their housing, childcare, food and utilities,” said local United Way President and Chief Executive Officer Bob Giannino. ....

WELLESLEY, Mass. and WATERTOWN, Mass., Feb. 4, 2021 /PRNewswire/ In their first joint community investment, the Harvard Pilgrim Health Care Foundation and Tufts Health Plan Foundation are giving $1 million to 42 organizations across the region to expand vaccine education, awareness and outreach in communities of color. Eight Connecticut organizations will receive a total of $225,000 in funding. Just one month after Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Tufts Health Plan announced their combined organization, this investment is an immediate response to emerging needs in Black and Brown communities across the region disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

Tax assistance program seen as difference maker

For single mother Naurie Del Valle, getting volunteer help filing her taxes opened up a key door for her small daycare business.
Two years ago, Del Valle said Friday, she purchased a house and was able to expand the backyard using money she gained from a refund facilitated through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program. That in turn gave her clearance to open her daycare.
Not opening a daycare means no income for my family. I have three girls, and I m a single mom, Del Valle said during a call hosted by the Massachusetts Association for Community Action (MASSCAP) to kick off the annual tax season. ....
