Even as the COVID-19 pandemic recedes, continued disruptions to recovery programs and a deadly, fentanyl-laced drug supply continue to drive increasing opioid overdose deaths in Connecticut, medical experts and harm reduction advocates say.
In 2020, opioid overdose deaths in Connecticut increased by 14.6% over the previous year and have largely continued to rise in the first half of this year, according to data from the state Department of Public Health.
“Is it going to get worse? Yes,” said Mark Jenkins, director of the Greater Hartford Harm Reduction Coalition, which distributes the opioid overdose-reversing drug naloxone, and offers education, syringe exchanges and other resources. ....

A $1.9 trillion COVID-19 aid package facing a U.S. Senate vote includes funding for states and local communities to tackle behavioral health and addiction after record-level drug overdose deaths nationwide in 2020.
At a virtual roundtable Monday with Connecticut addiction prevention and treatment providers, U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he hopes additional money will help boost on-the-ground efforts.

Connecticut Drug Use On The Rise Amid Pandemic

Public health officials addressing the opioid crisis in Connecticut say drug use and overdoses increased nearly 30 percent this fall compared to last year.
Mark Jenkins runs Greater Hartford Harm Reduction Coalition, which responds at the street level to deliver overdose antidotes. Jenkins said he has had to meet more basic needs of opioid users because of the pandemic economic crisis.
“I’m used to bringing syringes and stuff like that to people, not sandwiches. But we fill in need where need exists,” Jenkins said.
Jenkins asked U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal and state officials for resources for pandemic relief and medication assisted addiction treatment. ....
