Muscat: The Sultanate, represented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MoAFWR), is joining other countries in the world today in celebrating World Bee Day, which falls on May 20 every year.
The United Nations has designated May 20
th as World Bee Day to raise awareness on the importance of pollinators, highlight their contributions to sustainable development and the threats they face and to enhance measures that would protect bees and other pollinators.
In this context, MoAFWR has worked on developing the honey bee sector in the Sultanate by implementing supportive programs for beekeepers, organizing programms, setting laws governing the sector and holding two honey markets annually with the aim of expanding the marketing cycle for products and raising awareness on the importance of honey as food and as one of the crucial element to boost the economy in the Sultanate. ....

However, today the survival of these tiny food heroes is increasingly under threat. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has had an undeniable impact on the agri-food sector, affecting the livelihoods of rural and urban communities around the world, including beekeepers and other actors of the apiculture value chains. Dr. Ahmed Jamil Kattan has been a deputy minister for contractor classification at the Ministry of Municipal, Rural Affairs and Housing since 2019.
Kattan received a bachelor’s degree in computer sciences from the Jordan University of Science and Technology in 2005.
Two years later, he successfully completed an M.S. program in software engineering from the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex, UK, where he also obtained a Ph.D. degree in artificial intelligence in 2010.
In 2010, he worked as a research associate of game theory and evolutionary computation in the computer science department at Loughborough University in the UK. He also taught computer courses in the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Essex in 2007. ....
