What's in a name? WSTA sets out guidelines for low/no alcohol labels


With the rise in low/no alcohol products, the UK’s Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) has set out its recommendations for how to name and label low and no alcohol products designed as spirit drink substitutes.
While terms such as low alcohol and alcohol-free are defined in legislation, the name a product can use is less clear. The WSTA has therefore set out what names could be considered acceptable and which are likely to be considered to be misleading to consumers. It hopes the guide will assure producers that they are labelling and marketing their beverages correctly; as well as increasing consumer confidence in the category. ....

WSTA cracks down on "confusion" in low & no-alcohol with new guidance | News


The new guidance is to be used by retailers and producers
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA) is hoping to crack down on “confusion” in the low & no spirits sector with new guidance for the category.
The guidance, which has been produced in partnership with the WSTA’s Primary Authority Trading Standards Partners, aims to establish acceptable legal names, marketing text and general labelling requirements for low & no drinks.
Because low & non-alcoholic drinks are not legally defined by law, the WSTA is recommending brands use a “descriptive name” to inform customers exactly what is in them.
The WSTA said for drinks with a maximum abv of 1.2%, which are created using a distillate base or containing a defined spirit as an “influencing ingredient”, suppliers should refer to the presence of that spirit in the brand name, such as “low-alcohol spirit made with gin”. ....
