New York, NY (77WABC)-New York City’s Department of Education has announced that students will undergo all remote learning on bad weather days, virtually eliminating snow days from the NYC Public School Calendar.
Additional changes, to the public school calendar, are being blasted by public officials including City Council Members Joe Borelli (R), Steve Matteo (R), and Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11). The DOE has announced that the Columbus Day Holiday is changed to Indigenous People’s Day.
NYC Mayor Bill DeBlasio responded to criticism about the change during his morning briefing. He said he has spoken with NYC Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter saying the process in making the change “was not handled right.” ....

Amid a surge in hate crimes and violence against Asian Americans, New York students, parents, and lawmakers want schools to combat intolerance through education, with an infusion of Asian-American history and culture they say has been glaringly absent so far.
This week, thousands of parents sent a letter to Mayor Bill de Blasio and Schools Chancellor Meisha Porter calling on the education department to ensure lessons across the school system are more inclusive of Asian American experiences and contributions. They also want officials to make Asian American and Pacific Island Heritage Month part of the school calendar with activities to match, and provide students with tools to confront racism in their communities.  ....

NYC Public Schools Have Historic New Leader Exactly 1 Year Since COVID Shutdown

As Porter begins her new position, the city looks to move forward from a pandemic that ravaged so many lives and left tens of thousands of families struggling with hard decisions about remote vs in-person learning. High school students return in person to their classrooms in a week for the first time since mid-November; middle schoolers returned last month, while elementary and special education students had been back in-person since early December.
Nearly 300,000 students in grades 9-12 opted to continue to learn remotely.
Porter signs on at a particularly challenging time in the Department of Education s history. The mayor and the city are currently facing a lawsuit that alleged that the school system s policies have contributed to segregation and racism. ....
