COVID-19 claims youngest Comal County victim

A 20-year-old Spring Branch woman who died from the coronavirus in January was added to Comal Countyâs COVID-19 death total on Thursday.
County officials said the woman died Jan. 4 at a San Antonio hospital, adding the fatality was one of hundreds of COVID-19 fatalities throughout the state initially attributed to counties where they occurred instead of the decedentâs county of residence.
She is the youngest county resident to die from the virus and first in the 20-29 age bracket. Seguin firefighter Roger Dean, a 31-year-old Canyon Lake resident, died at a Houston hospital on April 23. The virus has now claimed 321 residents since the first victim, 44-year-old T.J. Mendez of New Braunfels, died in March 2020. ....

Comal County to end COVID-19 mass vaccination clinics in June

Citing fewer residents requesting COVID-19 vaccines, Comal County plans to conclude mass vaccination clinics with two next week and at least one in mid-June.
Public Health Director Cheryl Fraser said the county should be proud of the successful rollout of Moderna vaccines, with her office administering more than 33,000 first and second doses among the more than 109,000 administered throughout the county.
âWeâre estimating 40% of our eligible population (16 and older) is fully vaccinated,â she told county commissioners Thursday morning. âDue to the huge success of these clinics, it brings us to a turning point.â
The county had readied up to 4,000 vaccines for clinics held May 5-6 at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center, but only distributed 2,563 doses for the two days. Fraser said the next clinics will be Tuesday (for second doses) and Wednesday at the Civic Center. ....

Nursing students helping power Comal County's health department past 26,000 COVID-19 vaccinations

As COVID-19 active cases remain steady, Comal County commissioners enthusiastically approved agreements with San Antonio nursing schools whose students have played a critical role in county COVID-19 vaccinations.
âWe couldnât have done it without them,â said Cheryl Fraser, public health director, prior to county agreements formalizing relationships with Alamo Collegesâ St. Phillipâs College and Galen Health Institutes Inc., parent of Galen College of Nursing.
âWith these mass clinics weâre doing we need approximately 50 to 60 students to administer up to 2,000 vaccines a day,â Fraser said. âWeâve talked to several local colleges for students to do their clinical hours at the site (New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center).â ....

Comal County set to pass 30,000 vaccinations against COVID-19

Comal County officials are pleased with the pace and performance of COVID-19 clinics, which this week staged two more mass inoculations at the New Braunfels Civic/Convention Center.
âAs of (Wednesday) we held our 10th mass vaccination clinic at the Civic Center,â Cheryl Fraser, the countyâs public health director, said during Thursdayâs commissionerâs court meeting. âIt was our fourth second-dose mass vaccination clinic, and we administered 2,053 Moderna vaccines.â
Fraser said of the countyâs 47 registered COVID-19 vaccine providers, 19 have administered 13,900 doses. She said public health has administered 16,300 doses and plans to administer up to 6,000 first and second doses next Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for a total of 22,300. ....
