Finger Lakes Community College has launched a one-year viticulture certificate to provide a quicker path to a career in the growing wine and grape industry, particularly for adults who already have a college degree.
The 29 credit-hour program consists of nine classes that provide a practical education in viticulture and winemaking. Students will gain skills necessary to become a wine hobbyist or begin an entry-level position in the wine industry. They will also have the option to continue on and get the FLCC associate degree in viticulture and wine technology, which includes additional courses in science as well as history and communication. ....

The four-part series will take place each Wednesday in April, with a kick-off virtual Happy Hour on Tuesday April 6, where campers and wineries will participate in a meet-and-greet via Zoom while enjoying a glass of delicious and refreshing Finger Lakes Riesling.

The labor crunch across wine country is real, especially for grape-growers who need not just labor, but skilled, reliable and hard-working labor. In recent decades, the farm labor market has been transformed in this country by the H-2A program, which allows farmers to recruit seasonal agricultural workers from abroad.
By law, these workers are not permitted to take jobs away from domestic workers, so they can only be brought in after applicants prove that they have exhausted employment options at home, the offer must be for a temporary or seasonal job and they must be paid an hourly wage that is competitive. In California, that means around $14.77 an hour, while in North Carolina, the rate is about $12.67. Employers must also house and transport those workers to and from home. ....
