United States-bred runners SPARKLE DIAMOND and SIR ALTON are expected to dominate the betting in Monday’s eighth and closing event at Caymanas Park despite reporting off four-month breaks for the five-furlong straight overnight allowance sprint. Not having won an open allowance race since entering the group in excess of three months, SPARKLE DIAMOND and SIR ALTON are on get-out-of-jail cards, allowing them back among overnight allowance company, which they had beaten last year. SIR ALTON, in particular, actually passed the post in front in open allowance, beating Horse of the Year NIPSTER late November by two and a half lengths at seven and a half furlongs but was disqualified. ....
Ian Parsard’s SHE’S A WONDER has sparkled at exercise, 1:28.3 for seven furlongs, out the mile chute, last Thursday, appearing ready to outpace her peers in Wednesday’s fillies-only Thornbird Stakes at seven furlongs after clocking a fast 59.3 for five furlongs round on her seasonal debut. Runner-up to the colt FURTHER AND BEYOND in December’s Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes at a mile, SHE’s A WONDER’s 59.3, beating imported LURE OF LUCY by four lengths on February 6, was an impressive performance on a track running heavy for most of this season. Unlike her rival from last year, Anthony Nunes’ HOIST THE MAST, who had finished ahead of her in three meetings before the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes, SHE’S A WONDER has progressed as a three-year-old, giving her a good shot at June’s 1000 Guineas over a mile. ....
File photo Champion trainer Anthony Nunes’ CALCULUS reports off a 10-week break for Sunday’s six-furlong Sir Howard Stakes at Caymanas Park, but has looked in great shape at exercise, working alongside top-class stablemate, TOONA CILIATA. CALCULUS was two lengths adrift TOONA CILIATA’s 1:07.2 for five-and-a-half furlongs on Monday, the fastest at the distance that morning, a decent gallop for the colt which turned three the following day and hadn’t raced since finishing fifth behind stablemate FURTHER AND BEYOND in the Jamaica Two-Year-Old Stakes on December 27. Since scoring an impressive three-length win on debut late November, CALCULUS has kept rich company, returning mid-December to place third behind stablemates HOIST THE MAST and GO DEH GIRL in the six-furlong Dye Job Sprint. ....
