GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) We ve seen many people step up to help others during this pandemic. One ambitious service project undertaken by seniors at Saint Francis High School in La Canada Flintridge had them on a mission to get personal protective equipment to 21 local elementary schools in Glendale.
Andrew Karamian is spearheading the project focusing on Glendale elementary schools because he lives in the city and went to elementary school there.
Plus, there s another big reason: My mom who is an administrator in the Glendale Unified School District. She went back to work. I noticed that everyone s focus was on bringing the students and the teachers back to school and me and my group decided we are going to shift focus to the office staff, said Karamian. ....

Cajon High School pen pal club fosters new connections between students and seniors

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (KABC) The lost art of letter writing is finding new life in the era of COVID-19 with Cajon High School students in San Bernardino.
In September, juniors Noeh Parrales and Rosalie Grajeda formed the Care Mates club with a goal of writing to seniors living in isolation at care centers.
Especially at the time of the pandemic, we thought it would be a great way to try and help at least cheer the elderly up a little bit more, said Parrales.
Membership in the online club took off with more than a hundred students joining to become pen pals. So, far club members have corresponded with 138 seniors, including 56 at the Corona Residential Care Center. ....

Southern California girl who earned Eagle Scout rank in Boy Scouts hopes to inspire others

WHITTIER, Calif. (KABC) Becoming an Eagle Scout is the greatest achievement for anyone who joins the Boy Scouts of America. A teenage girl from Whittier has now joined that elite rank.
For most of its history the Boy Scouts has been all about the boys. But in 2018 the Boy Scouts opened the door to girls like Amy Allinson, and now she has joined an exclusive club: Eagle Scout.
It took a lot of leadership, it took patience leading the scouts in my troop. I had a lot of help from family, said Allinson.
Her brothers are also scouts, and so is her dad, and he can t hold back his excitement over his daughter s accomplishments. ....
