This July, Ford will open up the order banks for the all-new, all-electric 2022 E-Transit. To get fleet owners and operators all good and jazzed up, the automaker opened up a registration site and revealed how much the electric van will cost.
The 2022 Ford E-Transit will start at a targeted MSRP of $43,295 for cutaways and top out at $52,690 for the high-roof extended-wheelbase model. Ford had originally targeted $45,000 as the starting MSRP. This doesn’t include the $7,500 max federal tax incentive.
Ford’s also promising long-haul savings with the E-Transit, saying that maintenance should cost about 40 percent less than Transit vans powered by an internal combustion engine over the course of the first eight years or 100,000 miles. Ford Motor Company last week increased its investment in Solid Power, a manufacturer of solid-state batteries for electric vehicles. Leading a $130 million Series B funding round, Ford and BMW Group become equal equity owners in the company with the shared goal of lowering EV costs.
As Ford Chief Product Platform and Operations Officer Hau Thai-Tang notes, solid-state batteries are crucial to the continued development of EVs. Ford is pumping $22 billion into global electric vehicle production through 2025 as it pushes toward a zero-emissions lineup and carbon neutrality in manufacturing.
“Leveraging the speed of a startup and the expertise of some of the most seasoned battery experts in the world at Ford, we’re exploring different ways to power tomorrow’s fun-to-drive all-electric vehicles, using proven development and manufacturing processes,” said Thai-Tang. ....

When it comes to headlights, Ford is also literally and figuratively trying to get ahead of the curve by trialing new predictive smart headlights.
Engineers with Ford’s Research and Advanced Engineering unit in Europe are in the process of testing a new technology that uses GPS data to predict what and where to light on the road ahead. GPS data and up-to-date road geometry are fed into the system, allowing a vehicle to guess where the light will need to go. This will ideally help drivers see around bends and curves at night and in low-light situations. ....

With Ford ramping up toward a fully electric lineup, battery production takes on a new level of priority. The automaker is meeting those needs with the newly announced Ford Ion Park, a global battery center that will focus on research and development to help scale needs to meet demand. Ford plans to open the new facility toward the end of 2022.
