A walk to remember; 12-year-old N.S. boy walks across province to raise awareness of residential schools

A 12-year-old Nova Scotia Indigenous boy is leading a walk that will take at least six days, and span more than 150 kilometres across the province.
Carrying the weight of a community, Landyn Toney began his journey with one step on Thursday- and plans to take tens of thousands more by the time he s done.
“We’ve been walking for three days now… (Sunday) is going to be our fourth day,” said Landyn, who turned 12 on Friday.
He’s walking the equivalent of nearly four marathons to raise awareness about residential schools, while also raising money along the way. ....

Canada transfers ownership of 2 fishing wharfs to Nova Scotia First Nations

Tickle Wharf on the outskirts of Canso was repaired at a cost of $346,000 prior to its transfer to the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi kmaw Chiefs for $1 this spring.(Lost Shores Gallery)
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has given a commercial fishing wharf in Nova Scotia to a First Nations entity over objections from the local harbour authority.
Ownership of the Tickle Wharf in Canso was transferred this spring for $1 to the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi kmaw Chiefs.
As part of the handover, DFO spent $346,000 repairing the wharf in 2020.
The transfer was opposed by the Canso Harbour Authority, which manages the small but historic port on the province s Eastern Shore. ....

Federal Fisheries Minister Bernadette Jordan is standing behind Ottawa s consultation process, as some Nova Scotia First Nations voice opposition to its proposal for moderate livelihood fisheries.
The proposal released Wednesday invited nations to negotiate short-term fishery plans with her department, which would allow them to fish and sell their catch with DFO authorization this spring, on the condition that fishing is confined to the commercial season. ....

The search for five fishermen and for clues about what happened to their missing scallop vessel in the Bay of Fundy is now continuing by air only.
What began on Tuesday as a search-and-rescue mission on the water, as well as by ground and air, turned into an RCMP recovery mission 36 hours later.
All efforts were suspended when a winter storm hit Nova Scotia on Thursday, and they resumed only briefly by helicopter the following day. ....
