More stalking reported on Utah college campuses

The number of reported stalking cases has spiked at Utah’s colleges, worrying advocates who say the increase in crime is real but giving them hope, too, that more victims are coming forward to report.
Recently released data shows a total of 145 cases of stalking across the 10 public and private universities in the state for 2019. That’s up from 84 in 2018, according to crime statistics that colleges nationwide are required by the federal Clery Act to compile and release annually.
Never before had stalking reports crossed 100 for a single year among Utah’s institutions of higher education. ....

Every year, colleges are required to report the crimes that occur on or near their campuses.
Here are some of the takeaways for Utahâs eight public and two private colleges and universities, and where you can find your schoolâs newly released report for 2019.
1. New data shows a spike in cases of stalking among students across the state.
Reports of stalking jumped from 84 statewide in 2018 to 145 in 2019 â the single largest annual increase.
Advocates are encouraged, believing the numbers represent more victims coming forward â possibly spurred in part by the attention drawn by University of Utah student-athlete Lauren McCluskeyâs case. But the jump, they said, also likely means more crime is occurring. ....
