UPDATE: (8:30 PM) The Oregon Department of Forestry is monitoring five small fires on their protected land and an additional two on U.S. Forest Service Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forestland. The fires are due to a lightning storm that went through earlier this evening. The largest fire is a quarter of an acre with all others ranging between 1/10th to 1/100th of an acre. Fire crews are either still on scene or have already knocked down these fires. Firefighters will remain on duty to respond to any additional fires. ODF was assisted by Applegate Valley Fire District and Rural Metro Fire - Josephine County. ....

Cause determined in Redwood Highway Fire - KOBI-TV NBC5 / KOTI-TV NBC2

SELMA, Ore.– The cause of the Redwood Highway Fire, located on Highway 199 MP 23, has been determined to be a catalytic converter from a vehicle driving northeast toward Grants Pass. Six starts were found between milepost 17 and 23, including two smaller fires at mileposts 17 and 19 respectively, and four starts near milepost 23, which grew into the main body of the fire. Additional spot fires flared from there; in all, six acres were burned. It was noticed by investigators that dry fuels were particularly close to the road, likely playing a role in the ignition. If anyone driving in the area at the time of ignition has information, please contact the Grants Pass ODF office at (541) 474-3152. ....

The Redwood Fire along Highway 199 is mostly contained

The Redwood Highway Fire near Selma, Oregon is mostly contained. Nevertheless, fire officials are calling for increased caution and vigilance in extremely dry conditions.
Around 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, a 911 caller driving along Highway 199 reported a small fire burning near the road south of Selma. The caller said the fire was burning uphill toward the surrounding forested area, according to Jeff Gavlik, deputy chief with the Illinois Valley Fire District.
Immediately, firefighters with multiple agencies responded, beginning to contain and knock down the fire. Highway 199 was then temporarily closed Saturday night to allow firefighting ground crews and aircrafts to work through the night. By 5 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were able to contain and mop-up most of the fire, and the road has since reopened. ....
