Union Minister for Fishing, Animal Husbandry and Dairy, Giriraj Singh, on Sunday said that about 2000 fishermen, who were held in various countries for alleged violations, were safely brought back home in the last seven years.
The minister, who was in the coastal district, addressed sea-weed cultivators, Self-Help-Groups and fishermen, told reporters, after a meeting with AIADMK senior leader Anwar Rajhaa, that the Centre did its best for the fishermen as far as they were within the country. ....

A maritime dispute between India and Sri Lanka remains unsolved, despite an agreement 47 years ago. Notwithstanding the 1974 Indo-Lanka Maritime Boundary Agreement, Indian fishermen tend to cross the maritime border into Sri Lanka in the Palk Strait, which in turn leads to assaults by the Sri Lankan Navy. The latest incident, which led to the death of four Indian fishermen, has once again brought the dispute to the fore.
On January 18, four Indian fishermen went missing as they ventured into Palk Strait. A few days later, the Sri Lankan Navy announced that it had recovered four bodies, suspected to be of the missing fishermen. As news reached the shores of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, protests erupted as more than 200 fishermen blocked roads. They demanded 1.5 million Indian rupees (about $20,620) in c ....

Demanding the Central government to immediately help release nine fishermen detained in Sri Lankan prisons, fishermen at Thangachimadam observed a fast here on Wednesday.
Fishermen from different organisations joined together and under the banner of ‘Meenava Thozhilalargal Orunginaippu Kuzhu, Thangachimadam,’ observed the fast where a large number of women also participated.
Speaking at the fast, U. Arulanandam of Alliance for Release of Innocent Fishermen, said that the Centre should establish a commission to probe into deaths of four fishermen in the Palk Bay on January 18 allegedly by the Sri Lankan Navy. The police should be directed to register murder cases. ....
