To battle speeding, Cumberland will have full fleet of moving radar

Desmarais: Department has seen a shift to being more proactive
CUMBERLAND – Local police are dramatically expanding their fleet of cars equipped with cutting-edge moving radar, hoping to address one of the most common local complaints and catch more speeders.
Half of the Cumberland Police Department’s current fleet of 12 front-line patrol and traffic cruisers have moving radar equipment allowing their operators to catch speeders driving toward them from the opposite direction, and the department is now expanding that number by another five, leaving just one vehicle without the technology.
“With the use of additional radar units, the Cumberland Police would be better equipped to combat speeding in a town (where the) predominant complaint from its residents is speeding,” said Chief John Desmarais in a memo explaining the plan. ....

A sight for sore eyes: Howard Road Bridge reopens

CUMBERLAND – Michael Kanakry was so excited to see the bridge next to his home reopen Monday that he drove across it just for fun.
Kanakry, who has been keeping a close eye on the work for what seems like forever, said he and his wife Joanne were thrilled to see the bridge finally opened to traffic after three years of detours.
The Kanakry family, 40-year residents of 3 Howard Road, was among those who told The Breeze back in May that they were skeptical of the latest estimate of late summer for completion by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation. ....

CUMBERLAND – Den Leader Ben Grimes knew his Cub Scouts were facing a sharp uphill climb when leaders learned almost two months ago that the group would need $2,600 just to hold onto their charter. With only $1,500 in the bank, and typical fundraisers a no-go because of the pandemic, the future for Cub Scouts Pack 1 Arnold Mills was cast into doubt.
Pack 1 was already hurting, dealing with flagging participation since COVID hit in March as the traditional meetings and activities that participants are accustomed to became nearly impossible. The doors at their headquarters, at the Arnold Mills United Methodist Church, were locked as the pandemic struck back in March. ....
