Avoid low-income work requirements | News, Sports, Jobs

Cancer hasn’t stopped, so neither have we.
Every year, the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network brings cancer survivors and advocates to the state capitol to let lawmakers know that preventing suffering and death from cancer must be a top priority. Although we could not attend in person this year, my fellow advocates and I held a virtual day of action where we called on lawmakers to make fighting cancer a top priority.
We asked lawmakers to oppose legislation that would impose work requirements for Medicaid and make other changes to eligibility. Maintaining access to quality, affordable, accessible and comprehensive health care coverage and services is a matter of life and survivorship for thousands of low-income cancer patients and survivors. ....

Cancer Society says Florida Senate bill would worsen youth tobacco epidemic

FLORIDA — The American Cancer Society s Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) has issued a statement opposing a bill in the Florida Legislature which would revise regulations on the sale of tobacco and nicotine products.
The Cancer Action Network says that Florida Senate Bill 1080 would repeal the right of local communities to restrict tobacco usage.
On April 16 SB 1080 was approved by the Senate Rules Committee by a vote of 11-5 vote.
“Years of continued inaction by the state to regulate tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, demands strong, local laws that protect our children from a lifetime of addiction,” reads the statement issued by the Cancer Action Network which urges Florida lawmakers to do the right thing and oppose SB 1080 and protect Florida’s youth over tobacco industry profits. ....

Poll shows Montanans trust public health and want to keep decisions local

Emily Coyle, Andy Hunthausen and Dale J. Seifert
Montana’s response to the COVID pandemic has put our state’s public health system in the spotlight, as well as into the crosshairs.
Through numerous bills this session, members of the Montana Legislature have sought to attack our state’s public health system and insert politics and bureaucracy into the process of making decisions that keep our communities safe and healthy.
However, a new poll indicates that these efforts by legislators are driven more by special interests and ideology than by what Montana voters actually want. In fact, when it comes to making decisions regarding health concerns, Montana voters trust health officials more than politicians by a margin of more than 4 to 1. ....

Sunburn — The morning read of what’s hot in Florida politics — 4.20.21
Good Tuesday morning.
Breaking overnight — “
Gov. DeSantis signs online sales tax plan” via Renzo Downey of Florida Politics — DeSantis has signed the online sales tax bill into law, answering the question of whether he would act on the bill or let it roll into law without his John Hancock. An estimated $1 billion in revenue would come from the new enforcement of sales taxes technically already owed on purchases Floridians make from out-of-state sellers, but which few Floridians pay. DeSantis had until midnight to sign or veto the bill into law or else it would have gone into effect without his signature. Lawmakers sent him the bill on April 12. He waited until one hour left in the day Monday to send the alert that he had signed the measure. DeSantis never signaled his support for the plan. If anything, he voiced his opposition. ....
