Vaccines have not been reaching everyone equally, statistics show. Overall, Black and Hispanic people have been receiving smaller shares of vaccinations relative to their population and their portion of COVID-19 cases and deaths, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis from mid-April. Levels of disparity vary by region, but overall, white people have received a disproportionately high number of vaccines. Asian people in most states have received doses that tracked with their levels of cases and deaths. ....

Early in the pandemic, health care workers noted an alarming trend: people of color were dying at higher rates from COVID-19. This was happening in Wisconsin and continues across the country.

The study shows that Black churches are trusted to give their communities reliable information.
More than 100 of these Black churches in Rochester and the Twin Cities are active in the FAITH! program (Fostering African-American Improvement in Total Health), which LaPrincess Brewer, M.D., has led at Mayo Clinic since 2012.
Communities of color are being disproportionately affected by the pandemic, with higher infection and mortality rates.
Some of these disparities stem from a distrust in the community, which can leave many people without the information they need. ....

ROCHESTER, Minn. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there s increasing evidence that COVID-19 is adversely impacting communities of color, putting them more at risk of getting sick and dying.
In fact, the Mayo Clinic says African Americans are more than three times as likely to die from COVID.

A recent survey of more than 100 Black churchgoers found 75% either wouldn’t or were unsure if they would get a vaccine for COVID-19.
That survey is one part of a church and academic partnership initiative to help Black communities navigate the pandemic.
As health officials began to brace for the arrival of COVID-19 in the U.S., Dr. LaPrincess Brewer knew the pandemic would hit the Black communities especially hard. ....
