Over the past decade, small-scale illegal gold miners have transformed the landscape from tree-covered marshlands to a desert pockmarked with polluted ponds, leaking mercury into the local food web.
Multiple government crackdowns have tried to stamp out these artisanal gold mining activities to protect the national forests, but illegal operations are often able to shift location without attracting attention, creating a moving and hard to find target. However, artificial intelligence offers new hope.
NASA is backing the use of machine learning-enhanced satellite technology to capture the subtle movements of illegal gold mining in climate-sensitive areas of the world. While still in early stages, this novel innovation aims to help preserve the Amazon and the health of local communities in Peru, Latin America’s largest gold producer. ....

Wake Forest faculty in the University’s Center for Energy, Environment and Sustainability, and its Center for Amazonian Scientific Innovation (CINCIA) are part of an award-winning research team working to provide new technology to government regulators and local communities in the Amazon that could help eliminate the environmental and human costs of illegal gold mining.
Wake Forest’s Andrew Sabin Presidential Chair of Conservation Biology and CINCIA PI Miles Silman and computer science professors Paúl Pauca and Sarra Alqahtani are part of Project Inambari, an open mapping platform, initiated by the nonprofit conservation technology organization SkyTruth, that uses publicly available synthetic aperture radar satellite imagery in combination with other data sources to detect mining affected lands in tropical forests. ....
