New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday allowed the Centre to respond to the allegations of the Chairman of committee on Chardham project linking broadening of the road to the recent flash floods on Dhauliganga river, which damaged Tapovan hydro project in Uttarakahnd. Attorney General K K Venugopal told the apex court that he would file response to a letter of the chairman of a high-powered committee in which several allegations have been made with regard to broadening of the road and the recent disaster in the state. ....

India tops the world in road crash deaths and injuries. It has 1 per cent of the world s vehicles but accounts for 11 per cent of all road crash deaths, witnessing 53 road crashes every hour; killing 1 person every 4 minutes, the report said.
In the last decade, 13 lakh people died and another 50 lakh got injured on Indian roads, it said.

Bharatmala projects likely to be awarded by 2023

Synopsis
The first phase of the Bharatmala scheme approved in 2017 includes construction of 24,800 km of national highways, in addition to 10,000 km of balance road works under the National Highways Development Programme (NHDP).

“By close of FY21, we will have around 12,000 km of projects left to be awarded, which is possible to bid out in the next two fiscal years,” an official told.
The Centre aims to complete awarding of projects envisaged under Bharatmala, its flagship highways development programme, by 2023.

Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, India:
In the recent fake helmet racket busted in Cyberabad (Hyderabad). It was identified that the culprits belong to Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh and were manufacturing and selling fake ISI Mark helmets under the nose of authorities in Ghaziabad and in whole India. The culprits were arrested on January 10 at Ghaziabad.

In view of increasing menace of sale, distribution and usage of low quality fake ISI marked helmets in the city, Cyberabad Traffic Police constituted a special team to identify and conduct raid on the manufacturing units and godown storing them. ....
