NEW DELHI: Social media giant Facebook said it has received 40,300 requests from the Indian government for user data in the second half of 2020.
This was 13.3 per cent higher from the January-June 2020 period when India had made 35,560 total requests, according to the Facebook s latest Transparency Report.
The US-based company restricted access to 878 items in India during the second half of 2020 in response to directions from the IT Ministry for violating Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000, including content against security of the state and public order. ....

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has once again directed WhatsApp to take back its new Privacy Policy and sent a letter on May 18 telling the Facebook-owned company to withdraw its privacy policy.
Government has given seven days’ time to WhatsApp to respond to its notice and if no satisfactory response is received, necessary steps in consonance with law will be taken, sources privy to the letter told
BusinessLine.
WhatsApp had earlier claimed that it officially deferred its new Privacy Policy beyond 15 May. However, the Ministry in its communication stated that deferral of the privacy policy beyond May 15 does not absolve WhatsApp from respecting the values of informational privacy, data security and user choice for Indian users, sources said. ....

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday informed Parliament that there is no proposal with the IT ministry to set up a regulator for social media.
Union IT and communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, however, said that the government has released Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, under the IT Act that specifies the due diligence to be followed by all the intermediaries, including the social media intermediaries.
The social media platforms are enjoined to develop a robust grievance redressal system. Presently, there is no proposal with the ministry of electronics and information technology to appoint a regulator for social media, Prasad informed the Lok Sabha. ....
