P-platers will get licence discounts for safe driving


PROVISIONAL drivers will be eligible for “big licence fee discounts” if they “do the right thing”, according to the ACT government. 
The discounts brought in by the government will see provisional drivers, who progress through the P1 stage of their licence without attracting demerit points, traffic infringement notices or court-imposed traffic penalties, receive a 50 per cent discount (about $41) on the fee paid for the P2 stage of their licence.
Drivers who progress through both P1 and P2 stages of their provisional licence without attracting demerit points, traffic infringement notices or court-imposed traffic penalties will receive a further 30 per cent discount on licence fees (about $60 on a five-year full licence or $112.40 on a 10-year full licence) when they obtain their full licence. ....

Cameras will soon detect drivers using mobiles


Under the
Road Transport (Safety and Traffic Management) Amendment Bill 2021 the existing penalties will apply to a driver regardless of whether an offence is detected by a police officer or a camera.
This includes a maximum court fine of 20 penalty units or an infringement notice penalty of $480 and three demerit points for drivers who use their hand-held mobile device to make or receive a call.
The penalty for a driver who uses a mobile device for messaging, social networking, using a mobile app or accessing the internet is a maximum court fine of 20 penalty units or an infringement notice penalty of $589 and four demerit points. ....

Plans to build a 'bush' cemetery in Symonston

CITY Services Minister Chris Steel today (April 14) announced plans to build a “bush cemetery” in Symonston to meet the growing demand for another cemetery in Canberra’s south. 
Set to be located on Mugga Lane, the development of Southern Memorial Park will take place over a four-stage master plan that will aim to accomodate Canberra’s growing population over the next 100 years.
Mr Steel said stage one of the master plan will include road access, preparation for future wetlands, car parking, landscaping and the first 2500 burial plots, and is set to be open within five years following the completion of detailed plans. ....
