Tiwai Point by-product completely removed from Southland town

The waste - a by-product of aluminium production at the Tiwai Point smelter - releases deadly ammonia gas if it gets wet.
The Southland town s old paper mill site is situated next to the Mataura River.
The dross is a form of metal-rich scum off the top of aluminium processing pods, that is processed to remove the metal into a product that can then be converted into other materials, including ouvea premix which itself is a hazardous substance.

It's done! - Government welcomes safe removal of all dross from Mataura

All of the 10,000 tonnes of aluminium dross by-product stored in Mataura’s old paper mill site next to the Mataura River has been removed.
Environment Minister David Parker welcomed the news that the last bags of dross were moved from Mataura last Wednesday to be stored in watertight shipping containers at New Zealand Aluminium Smelters’ Tiwai Point.
“The safe removal means Mataura residents no longer need to worry about the risk from the material, which gives off ammonia gas if it gets wet.
“I’m glad that the dross has now gone from Mataura and local residents don’t need to worry any longer. The safe removal will protect the wellbeing of Southland’s people and its waterways. ....

This Government is proposing a significant tax on Mum and
Dad landlords despite promising prior to the election that
they would impose no new taxes, National’s Shadow
Treasurer Andrew Bayly says.
“According to advice
from Treasury, IRD, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban
Development dated February 2021, the removal of interest
deductibility means a landlord with a $700,000 mortgage
would face a tax increase of approximately $9,240 a
year.
