The New Zealand Māori Council is calling for Māori to be involved in decision making at every step of the reformed resource management process.
Spokesperson Pita Fraser says while the 30-year-old Resource Management Act failed to deliver on its promise to Māori, the proposed Natural and Built Environments Act is as yet underwhelming.
The council is concerned issues relating to allocation and use of water, which are of major concern to Māori, are not even in the exposure draft being put out for consultation. ....

A local planner warns Queenstown will lose its planning autonomy under the government’s proposals to replace the Resource Management Act (RMA).
Instead of a council district plan, this area would operate under a regional plan run out of Dunedin or Invercargill one of 14 regional plans across New Zealand.
Experienced planner Blair Devlin, who’s with planning and landscape architecture  consultancy Vivian + Espie but has also worked for the Queenstown and Dunedin councils
and for central government, says ‘‘when you think of health and transport, when they’re based out of Dunedin, Queenstown’s always the poor cousin’’. ....

The
Government has released the first draft of the Natural and
Built Environments Act (NBA), one of the proposed laws meant
to replace the cumbersome Resource Management Act (RMA)
which has stunted New Zealand’s ability to build more
houses.
Reforming the Resource Management Act has been
seen as a once in a generation opportunity to improve New
Zealand’s ability to deliver more housing. While some are
praising the Government for taking action, others say the
Government has just squandered that opportunity.
