The stubborn refusal of immigration officials to release video of a Sri Lankan woman who died while in detention is raising suspicions among her bereaved sisters and opposition lawmakers about a cover-up.
Wayomi and Poornima Sandamali met with opposition lawmakers on May 19 to discuss the death of their elder sister, Wishma, 33. She died on March 6 while detained at a facility run by the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau.
“The immigration agency may be hiding something if it is unable to release the video,” one of the sisters said. ....

Sisters of the Sri Lankan woman who died while detained at an immigration facility in Nagoya met the justice minister on May 18 and urged her to release the facility’s video footage of their sister.
Wayomi and Poornima Sandamali are visiting Japan following the death of their sister Wishma in March.
Wishma, 33, died at a detention facility run by the Nagoya Regional Immigration Services Bureau after suffering from severe nausea and experiencing difficulty walking. She was detained in August after overstaying her visa. ....

TOKYO Debate over a proposed revision of Japan s immigration control law has reached a peak in Diet proceedings. The country s immigration policy has been the target of criticism from both in and outside Japan over issues such as the extremely low refugee status recognition rate of less than 1%, infinite detention periods of foreign nationals served with deportation orders, and inhumane treatment of such individuals.
The Mainichi Shimbun sat down with a former immigration officer who revealed the inner workings of Japan s immigration agency to examine whether revisions to the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act would actually help solve the country s immigration administration issues. ....

Opposition lawmakers joined international criticism of a revision bill that would make it easier for the government to deport foreigners who are illegally staying in Japan, including those seeking asylum.
“It could endanger their lives if they were deported based on a mistaken judgment,” Tomohiro Yara, a member of the main opposition Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, said at the Lower House plenary session on April 16.
Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa, however, underlined the urgency and significance of amending the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law. ....
