Hospital emergency departments in Oregon have been overloaded with patients since spring and hit a high point last week. At PeaceHealth Southwest Washington Medical Center, it s slowly starting to improve, but emergency rooms are still busy.
We’re still quite crowded in the hospital and my understanding is a lot of the hospitals in the area are still quite crowded, but doing better than we were last week for sure,” said Dr. Jason Hanley, medical director of the hospital s emergency department.

FAIRWAY/164TH Touchmark at Fairway Village resident Dave Difford celebrated his 105th birthday on Dec. 21. About two dozen vehicles participated in a parade, as well as motorcyclists with the Patriot Guard Riders. Mayor McEnerny-Ogle announced Dec. 21 as Dave Difford Day, honoring him with an official proclamation in addition to the parade, including military and other officials from Kindness 911. Difford spent four years in the Army, as well as decades in the plywood industry. He was born in Philadelphia and moved to Louisville, Ky., in 1919. He majored in engineering at the University of Kentucky and was an ROTC member, graduating in 1936 as second lieutenant in the Army Reserve. He moved to Washington that year a ....

Lane County reports 143 new COVID-19 cases Saturday
Lane County reported 143 new confirmed or presumptive cases of COVID-19 Saturday, raising the countywide total to 7,664. There are 432 people considered infectious, an increase from 352 the day before.
The death toll did not increase from Friday s count of 96. There are still 40 people hospitalized, the same as Friday.
The county had administered 5,574 first vaccine doses Friday, up 4.7% from Wednesday s 5,319.
Lane County hospitals to distribute more vaccines
Lane County hospitals McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center and PeaceHealth will be assisting community vaccination efforts, Lane County Public Health announced Friday.
The hospitals will vaccinate high-priority, frontline health care professionals. ....

Providence closes hospital unit amid COVID-19 outbreak

Registered nurse Jeremy Shipley worked in the unit and contracted the virus. He’s recovering but it’s been devastating, he said, to catch the coronavirus despite his meticulous attention to safety.
“I’ve been a champion of personal protection and caution,” he said. “I feel overwhelming shame that I was the one on our staff who went down.”
Several Oregon hospitals have had virus outbreaks. A total of 158 staff and patients have contracted COVID-19 at Salem Hospital since June. Nearly 90 have been infected at Good Shepherd Hospital in Hermiston since summer. Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg has reported 61 COVID cases sincesummer. ....
