AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) A Maine legislative committee has approved a proposal designed to aid public schools in buying more fresh, local food.
The proposal, by Democratic Sen. Eloise Vitelli of Arrowsic, would expand the state’s Local Produce Fund to allow schools to buy more food via sources other than directly from farms. Vitelli said the change would also expand the program beyond produce to include protein foods such as meat, fish, tofu and eggs.
The proposal would also increase the reimbursement cap, which would encourage more local purchasing, Vitelli said. Vitelli said that by “expanding the venues that schools can use to buy this food, and expanding the kind of locally produced food they can buy, we’ll help get healthy, fresh food to more students in our state and help more farmers connect with buyers for their produce.” ....

KANSAS CITY, Mo. â The second mass vaccination clinic scheduled to take place at Arrowhead Stadium has been canceled.
The clinic was originally planned for April 29 and April 30.
A representative from the Jackson County Health Department says the cancellation is due to the pause in the J & J vaccine. They say the stadium and National Guard were not available to administer a second dose if they were to use the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration recommended the pause last week as the FDA and CDC investigate cases of blood clotting. ....

In a letter sent to families Wednesday, Regional School Unit 1 Superintendent Patrick Manuel said one additional COVID-19 case was reported during the three-day closure, adding to a wave of recent cases in the schools. Morse High School and the Bath Regional Career in Bath are closing their doors through Wednesday after a series of COVID-19 cases prompted the state to declare an outbreak. School officials say they don’t believe the virus is being spread on school grounds, and that the people who contracted the virus likely did so elsewhere in the community.
Superintendent Patrick Manuel announced the closure in an email to parents and staff Sunday afternoon, saying three cases had been confirmed over the weekend. That was in addition to three cases identified the preceding week. ....
