Gender neutral school bathroom policy on deck Shelter Island School. (Credit: Ambrose Clancy) The Shelter Island Board of Education offered a first reading of a policy Monday evening creating gender neutral single occupancy bathrooms at the school. The policy is in line, officials said, with creating and maintaining an inclusive educational and work environment. If the policy is adopted it would designate all single-occupancy bathroom facilities as gender neutral for use by no more than one occupant at a time or for family or assisted use. Graduation plans With the COVID-19 pandemic last spring, school officials went out of their way to implement special activities around the graduation of the class of 2020. ....
Ready, set, inoculate; town and school ready for vaccine distribution Shelter Island School. (Credit: Ambrose Clancy) Approximately 500 Islanders will get their first COVID-19 inoculations Friday at Shelter Island School where the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is to be administered. Town and school officials have been working in the past few days to get the approval for an on-Island administration of the vaccine and lining up appointments for people. This round of inoculations will go only to Shelter Island residents, including seniors 65 and older, first responders, employees who work with the public, teachers, grocery store employees and restaurant staffs who are eligible and want the vaccine. ....

(Credit: Ambrose Clancy) To kick off Black History Month, NBC-TV New York’s Greg Cergol interviewed Sylvester Manor Curator Donnamarie Barnes, and East Hampton Star Owner/Editor David Rattray of the Plain Sight Project on Monday, Feb. 1. Later this month, Ms. Barnes will be featured in a story on the channel focused solely on Sylvester Manor and its role in slavery. Next Monday, Feb. 8 from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Ms. Barnes and Mr. Rattray will be discussing the Plain Sight Project in an online program hosted by Guild Hall, called, “GATHER: Conversations led by Black and Indigenous Change Makers in Suffolk County.” ....
(Credit: Ambrose Clancy) Gov. Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for Suffolk County, as well as Nassau, NYC and several upstate counties, late Monday morning. Several roadways such as the Long Island Expressway could face travel bans if snowfall rates reach the expected two to three inch per hour rate, according to the governor. A travel advisory also notes that delays should be expected on the Long Island Railroad. “New Yorkers are being urged to avoid all unnecessary travel,” the governor’s office said in a press release. Anyone who must travel should do so with extreme caution and try to reach their destination before noon, the release said. ....
