Dwight Williamson: Logan County can become 'great' again

Perhaps it’s just the advent of springtime or the acknowledgment that the COVID-19 virus is behind me, but for the first time in a long while there is a feeling of optimism within my beleaguered soul. I finally can say, “There is hope for Logan County,” particularly the town of Logan.
No, I don’t mean that there are 10 new coal mines opening throughout the county, nor am I writing to announce the plans for some manufacturing plant that will employ hundreds of our county’s young citizens. However, things seem to be looking a bit better.
Before delving into the present, it always pays to appreciate the past, both the good and the bad. Take, for instance, the year of 1953 as I drew my first breath of air and screamed when my mother gave birth to me at the old Holden Hospital. For younger folks, I realize it has to be difficult to envision, but even as many people were leaving southern West Virginia at the time because of automation that led to fewer e ....

France will be responsible for the college’s overall communications strategy, including press releases, branding, public relations, web presence and social media.
“France has established himself as a strong communicator with a long work history in journalism, public relations and marketing,” said Dr. Pamela L. Dwight Williamson: Logan High School almost missed being on the island

One doesn’t have to be in downtown Logan to understand that the past is something that should not only be understood, but also appreciated for what transpired decades ago that could have changed all of what we identify with today. Sound confusing? Allow me to simplify the statement in an example.
What if I told you that all of Logan Senior High School’s Midelburg Island history — including former legendary basketball coach Willie Akers’ four AAA state championships and his 427 coaching victories over a splendid 20-year career — never happened? No fieldhouse overflowing with thousands of cheering fans? No football field? No baseball or softball fields? Indeed, no high school, middle school or elementary school? What if … ? ....

Dwight Williamson: Every building in downtown Logan has a story

There is not a single building in the town of Logan that is not historically connected to the annals of times past where the names of many civic, business, and political leaders strived and even thrived in what was an ever-growing city full of vigor and vision — most of which occurred in the first 30 years of the 20th century.
Although few people really have given it much thought because history never looks like history when you are living through it, the fact is that there are numerous structures in Logan which are over 100 years old. Those buildings, like others which are not quite as aged, all were a part of a past where each brick in every property has outlasted the person(s) who had the vision to develop the real estate. ....
