Irvine man secures international music recognition at virtual awards


A TALENTED award-winning Irvine musician has now secured an international music prize.
Ex-Greenwood Academy pupil and senior concert band member Adam Lee was delighted to receive a top distinction award in the Brass and Wind section in the 2021 Tunbridge Wells International Music Competition – performing Michael Whalen’s The Shadows of October:
The competition, held virtually this year, is recognised around the world for outstanding young musicians as they embark upon their professional careers and has supported many internationally celebrated musicians.
During the event, the judges said: “Adam’s playing has the ability to make time stand still, John and I were both extremely moved by his musicality, his exquisite phrasing as well as incredible clarinet playing – but with a player like this you forget what instrument it is you are listening to or they’re playing its just so powerful, and that is certainly the case with Adam’s playing..” ....

Irvine musician secures place in Royal College of Music course


A TALENTED Irvine musician will be studying at London’s Royal College of Music.
Ex-Greenwood Academy pupil and Senior Concert Band member Adam Lee has now secured a place on the top school’s Masters in Performance course.
We reported last year Adam scooped the top prize in the Royal Scottish Conservatoire’s coveted woodwind music performance competition – after using his lockdown time to perfect his art ahead of his online performance.
A spokesperson for North Ayrshire Music Service said: “Congratulations to former Senior Concert Band member and Greenwood pupil Adam Lee who has accepted a place and scholarship for the Master in Performance course at the Royal College of Music London. ....

Dundee Rep virtually hosts Dùsgadh - a 'beautiful' film with Breabach score based on Scottish folktale The Sea Maiden

Michael Alexander speaks to Monifieth-raised Calum MacCrimmon – founder member of internationally renowned folk band Breabach – which has teamed up with Scottish BAFTA-winning animator Cat Bruce to create a beautiful film and score based on Scottish folktale The Sea Maiden, being aired on February 13 with Dundee Rep.
During these strange and uncertain times, the “new normal” has taken its toll on people from all walks of life including musicians who, almost a year ago, suddenly found all their gigs cancelled.
Amongst them was Monifeth-raised musician Calum MacCrimmon who, as founding member of internationally renowned bagpipe-led folk band Breabach, went from a 2020 diary filled with concert and festival dates to something of an existential vacuum. ....
