Madera Canyon trails get face lift with help from grants

During 2020, record numbers of visitors came to Madera Canyon to enjoy the trails, nature and a little time away from all things COVID-19.
Attendance was about 90,000 over 2019, with May, June and July seeing more than a 300 percent increase in visitors. The additional foot traffic further eroded the canyonâs most popular trails.
The non-profit Friends of Madera Canyon, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service, this month completed the majority of phase one of a two-phase, grant-funded project to restore two of the canyonâs busiest trails, Old Baldy and the Super Trail. Phase two is set for fall. ....

TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - The Coronado National Forest is taking steps to reduce hazards on designated National Forest System trails in the burn scar of the Bighorn Fire.
Forest staff completed saw work to remove leaning and fallen trees and shrubs at Mint Springs, Marshall, Aspen, Palisades, Box Camp, Upper Green Mountain, and Butterfly trails to prepare the trails for volunteers and partners to have a safe work environment to perform trail tread work as they continue efforts toward reopening trails. ....
