Sickle Cell Foundation Of Ghana Expresses Appreciation To Government For Its Decision On Hydroxyurea For Treatment Of Sickle Cell Disease

On World Sickle Cell Day (19th June 2021) the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, announced through his Facebook and Instagram pages that hydroxyurea, a disease-modifying therapy for sickle cell disease (SCD) will now be provided under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to improve the health of people living with SCD in Ghana.
This announcement followed a meeting he convened on 8th June 2021, with stakeholders including Professor Kwaku Ohene-Frempong, President of the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana (Foundation), Hon. Kwaku Agyemang-Manu, Minister for Health, Dr. Lydia Dsane-Selby, Chief Executive, National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, Director General, Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Anthony Nsiah Asare, Special Advisor to the President on Health, and Mr. Roland Hammond-Addo of Novartis. ....

A student of SOS-Herman Gmeiner International College, Ms Chloe Elinam Mawuenyega, has donated GH₵12,000 to support the Sickle Cell Foundation of Ghana.
The 15-year-old raised the sum through a car-wash fundraising activity and presented a cheque to that tune to the foundation in Accra last week.
The fund-raiser was undertaken as part of expectations on all Year-5 students, which required them to explore an area of personal interest to deliver tangible outcomes. ....

Novartis and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have signed an agreement to embark on further studies to find a cure for Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).
A statement issued by the Sickle Cell Foundation and copied to the Ghanaian Times said, as part of the agreement, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation would provide funding support for the discovery and development of a single-administration, in vivo gene therapy to cure sickle cell disease (SCD).
The Group Head of Corporate Affairs and Global Health for Novartis, Lutz Hegemann in his remarks said “Novartis is proud to lead this effort to find an accessible genetic therapy for sickle cell disease, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.” ....
