Art matters at Sarasota Art Museum
Saturday marks the opening day of the first comprehensive retrospective of the painter Robert Colescott with the exhibition “Art and Race matters: The Career of Robert Colescott.” On display through Oct. 21, the exhibit features 53 works produced during 50 years of a prolific career. His colorful and lively paintings tinged with satire have confronted a variety of issues related to race, gender, identity and the challenges of living in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. The exhibition was curated by Lowery Stokes Sims and organized by Raphaela Platow and originated at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. SARASOTA — As balmy weather sends people outdoors in search of natural backdrops to pepper into their social media feeds, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens ups the ante with “Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop.”

Selby Gardens opens Monet goes Pop! with art work by Roy Lichtenstein


Staff members at Selby Botanical Gardens admit they may have gotten carried away with inspiration while designing their latest art-meets-nature exhibition “Roy Lichtenstein: Monet’s Garden Goes Pop!”
“We just went a little crazy,” said Mike McLaughlin, the director of horticulture, who worked with a team of staff members to transform the conservatory and grounds into an assortment of whimsical displays that reflect Lichtenstein’s Pop art interpretations of classic works by French Impressionist painter Claude Monet of his gardens in Giverny, France, and his famed haystacks.
“There was a lot to work from,” McLaughlin said of the latest entry in the Jean and Alfred Goldstein Exhibition Series, which opens today and continues through June 27 at Selby’s downtown Sarasota campus. The series has previously featured botanical-related art work by Marc Chagall, Paul Gauguin, Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali. ....
