There's A New Wrangler In Town: Local Trains To Rescue Eagles As Volunteers Depart For Summer

There s a new bald eagle wrangler in Unalaska.
That s right: The island has volunteers who, under a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service permit, help rescue injured eagles or salvage dead ones.
Normally, local fisheries biologist Brianna McGrath heads a group of four volunteers to do the job. But nearly all of them are leaving the island for the summer a busy time for pulling eagles out of warehouses or rescuing injured ones from Unalaska s docks and local spit.
That s where Megan Dean comes in.
McGrath tapped Dean as Unalaska s newest raptor wrangler to help bridge the summer gap in volunteers.  ....

'It's Going To Hurt:' Hopes Of A Lucrative Summer Tourism Season In Unalaska Are Fading

Credit Hope McKenney/KUCB
This summer is shaping up to be another quiet tourism season in Unalaska. While public health mandates and regulations loosen, things like reduced ferry service to the island, ongoing regulatory battles keeping large cruise ships out of port and lingering fears about the risks of COVID-19 will likely mean Unalaska s shores will remain mostly void of visitors for the second year in a row.
The ferry M/V Tustumena is scheduled for just five sailings to Unalaska, rather than its twice-monthly service that was the norm through 2019. And while Carlin Enlow, executive director of the Unalaska Visitors Bureau (UVB), said the island was expecting roughly 18 cruise ships this summer, the community will likely only see about four or five vessels.  ....

Unalaska Community Support Program Unable to Meet Growing Funding Requests From Local Agencies

Credit Berett Wilber/KUCB
At a special meeting this week, the City of Unalaska granted more than $1.34 million to nine local organizations through its community support program for the fiscal year 2022. That s less than a 3% increase from last year s funding, despite more than a 9% increase in the amount requested.
When Unalaska s nonprofits were granted funding from the city s community support program last year, they knew that funding was going to be crucial. At the time, they faced hunker down orders, mandated closures and a drastic drop in tourism due to the coronavirus pandemic.
What they may not have realized is the pandemic would still be taking harsh jabs at their revenue nearly a year later, when they returned to ask the city for funding again. ....

Unalaska s neighboring communities of Atka and Nikoski as well as St. George in the Pribilof Islands are almost completely vaccinated against COVID-19 through the tribal vaccine rollout.
We ve got enough vaccines to get everybody completed, said Lori Jackson, a nurse practitioner and medical director for the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association, which operates the tribal community clinic in Unalaska.
The Oonalaska Wellness Center is acting as a vaccine hub to get doses out to those communities in the Aleutians and Pribilofs that APIA serves. Jackson said that s anywhere between 450 and 490 people across the four communities. ....
