Black pupils in 14 L.A. school districts face equity barriers

Black students in Los Angeles County continue to face a multitude of barriers to an equitable education, including concentrated poverty, high suspension rates and housing insecurity, a UCLA report released Wednesday found.
Researchers focused on 14 school districts in the county that serve at least 800 Black students to understand how various factors are leaving behind Black children, particularly those considered vulnerable. The report by the UCLA Center for the Transformation of Schools builds on a previous study that found schools serving Black students lacked critical resources counselors, nurses, social workers, highly qualified teachers and students’ home and community environment played a role in their academic success. ....

L.A. County Anti-Racism, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative Calls for Unity Against Anti-Asian Hate Crimes

On behalf of the Los Angeles County Anti-Racism, Diversity and Inclusion (ARDI) Initiative, we join the many voices condemning the recent surge of hate crimes and violence against our Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities.
We also grieve with our AAPI community members, and all who are impacted by racially motivated acts of brutality. Our condolences go out to the victims, their families and friends, and the community.
The high-profile shootings that recently occurred in Atlanta and took the lives of eight individuals happened alongside numerous reported attacks against our AAPI communities. According to the #StopAAPIHate campaign, this rise in violent crimes has led to more than 3,795 reported anti-Asian hate incidents in the past year. ....

L.A. County moves to include Asians in anti-hate initiative

L.A. County is home to some of the largest populations in the United States of Burmese, Cambodian, Chinese, Filipino, Indonesian, Korean, Sri Lankan, Taiwanese and Thai Americans, according to the motion.
D’Artagnan Scorza, the county’s executive director of racial equity, said at Tuesday’s board meeting that since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been an exponential growth in violence and hate against Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander communities.
In 2020, Los Angeles police saw a 114% increase in anti-Asian hate crimes, Scorza said.

“This has occurred largely because of very public and racist rhetoric rooted in harmful stereotypes,” Scorza said. ....
