The Dullest Pencil

The dullest pencil . remembers better than the sharpest mind. My co-worker, and friend, Ted Cramer, says that all the time, and it is very true. We all like to think we can remember whatever it is we are supposed to remember without having to write it down. If we are honest with ourselves, we know better than that.
I have made enough trips to the grocery store at this point in my life to know that if I go, I better write down everything I need to pick up. Having a written list saves the embarrassment of needing to call my wife before I get in the checkout line to make sure I got everything, because I know I missed something (I hate that). Having a list is also the only absolutely, positively, 100% way to be sure I won t have to make a second trip (I really hate that). And so, I write things down because my forgetter works a whole lot better than my rememberer does. ....

KDE releases new NTI guidance after Gov. Beshear signs HB 208 into law

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) released a new COVID-19 guidance document on March 9 that details changes and updates to Kentucky’s Non-Traditional Instruction (NTI) Program as a result of House Bill (HB) 208 (2021).
On March 4, Gov. Andy Beshear signed HB 208 into law, codifying many of the emergency regulations under which Kentucky’s schools and districts have been operating during the 2020-2021 school year. This new law extends the flexibilities offered under the emergency regulations through the end of the current school year.
The changes to the NTI program under HB 208 do not go into effect until March 29. Districts may continue their current plans until that date. ....

In-person instruction to increase for Roanoke's elementary students, some secondary

Elementary and certain secondary students can attend school in-person four days per week beginning next month, the Roanoke School Board voted Wednesday.
Following a fraught discussion over whether the district could have done even more, the board voted unanimously to bring back all elementary students and voted 6-1 to bring back certain middle and high school students four days per week. Laura Rottenborn was the sole dissenting vote because she wanted more secondary students to attend four days.
“I recognize that it’s not black and white. I think there are lots of countervailing considerations,” she said. “But I would prefer a plan that at least maxed out our capacity in our schools within the guidelines. I don’t think we’ve turned over every stone to do it, and my heart is truly broken for the kids in our district who are genuinely suffering. It hurts.” ....
