Juan Castro has worked as a licensed vocational nurse for a decade, but the San Antonio native says this period in time may just be the reason he was drawn to the field.
“I’m really into history and just about every generation of nurses have their trial, whether polio or HIV,” he says. “I believe this is my calling as a nurse.”
With a long family tradition of military service, Castro enlisted in the Navy as a young adult and was medically discharged after four years due to an injury. The care he received during rehab sparked his interest in health care. After earning his degree, Castro spent more than six years working in a correctional facility before joining an acute care hospital and most recently the Medical/Surgical Services Unit at Baptist Medical Center Downtown. “I couldn’t have picked a better field. I love it,” he says. ....
