Historically, an estimated 6,500 racial terror lynchings were documented in the United States between 1865 and 1950. In Florida, 343 victims of lynching have been discovered, with 12 occurring here in Gainesville. 
During the era of Reconstruction, the city of Gainesville’s population was majority Black and enjoyed many Black-owned businesses, schools and churches. Political engagement during that time was largely fostered by Black leaders. Alongside this progress came violence that was amplified and sanctioned by white elites, law enforcement and others in an effort to terrorize Black people, take their businesses and homes, and eliminate strong traditions of Black organizing.  
We must highlight incidents such as George Floyd’s murder, and acts of racial terror that have historically been a function of America’s racist system   a system which was founded in white supremacy and dependent upon the subjugation of Black and Indigenous peoples   rath ....
