It was Voltaire’s “Candide” that reminded us to tend to one’s own garden. Whether he meant taking care of the Garden of Eden, or the small portion of the world that is closest and dearest to each of us, we are drawn to the importance of helping to make the world healthier and safer in our relatively small local area of personal influence.
In that regard, the Florida Springs Institute just completed a three-year study of our home river and springs namely, the lower Santa Fe River, from Worthington Spring at the State Road 121 bridge, downstream to the river’s confluence with the Suwannee River. In addition to more than 30 springs large and small, this river segment receives much of the surface runoff from Alachua, Bradford, Columbia, Gilchrist and Union counties. ....

Ash-filled air and smoke-filled skies are more common in Florida than one might think. Prescribed fire is used year-round to preserve some of our state’s unique ecosystems.
Prescribed fire is the planned and controlled application of fire by a team of certified experts. It is done to restore health to ecosystems that depend on fire.
Many of Florida’s landscapes depend on fires to survive. Longleaf pines, turkey-oak sandhill, and Rockland Pine Forests are all Florida ecosystems that are fire-dependent.
Prescribed fire accomplishes a number of land management purposes. It eliminates decayed plant matter that can fuel wildfires, improves accessibility to the landscape and helps recycle nutrients back into the soil, promoting new growth. ....

Sandhill grassland ecosystem with 243 native plant species now protected in Columbia County

A 518-acre property that is home to 243 native plants is now protected as an easement in Columbia County. (Provided by North Florida Land Trust)
A 518-acre property in western Columbia County within the Ichetucknee Springs Focus Area and the Santa Fe and Suwannee River watersheds is now protected under the NRCS Agricultural Conservation Easement Program.
It’s one of the first agreements protecting a Grassland of Special Environmental Significance in Florida under the program.
The property features an exemplary sandhill grassland ecosystem, dominated by an intact old growth diverse groundcover that has been actively managed with prescribed fire by the family for multiple generations, according to North Florida Land Trust, which partnered with Alachua Conservation Trust on the project.
