MONTGOMERY, Ala. Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey announced on Tuesday the Alabama First Class Pre-K program will be expanding with 135 new classrooms across 41 counties this fall.
According to the Governor s Office, the funding for the classrooms comes from the Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education. More classrooms are expected to be funded after further evaluation of high-needs areas.
The Governor s Office said the program will be extended to 24,714 children. They say this helps move Alabama closer to its goal of serving 70% of eligible four-year-old children. ....

Alabama's Pre-K Program Ranked Best in Nation for 15th Straight Year

“Ensuring our youngest learners have a strong start to their educational journeys is important now, more than ever. Alabama continues to set the nationwide bar for our success with the Alabama First Class Pre-K program,” Ivey said in a statement.
Each year since 2017, Alabama First Class Pre-K has received increased support from the Education Trust Fund as recommended by the governor and approved by the Alabama Legislature.
Access to Pre-K grew to more than 34% of four-year-olds in the state while continuing to meet all 10 NIEER quality standards benchmarks in the 2019-2020 school year. The Alabama Department of Early Childhood Education, which administers the First Class Pre-K program through the Office of School Readiness, requires all First Class Pre-K lead teachers to have a bachelor’s degree, at a minimum, and provides salary parity with K-3 teachers. Access for the 2020-2021 school year now stands as 37 %. ....

TUSCALOOSA , Ala. (WBRC) - Parents in Tuscaloosa looking to register their child for the Alabama First Class Pre-K program now have longer to do so.
Tuscaloosa City Schools has extended sign up for parents to Monday, March 8. Parents have until 11 a.m. that day to apply.
A random selection process will take place on March 12 at 9 a.m. Parents will be informed of a selection during the week of March 15. The TCS Pre-K coordinator said many spots are still open. ....
