Fort Payne wishlist greater than its checkbook

The Fort Payne City Council held a brief meeting on Tuesday with a public hearing to receive public comments on a proposed re-zoning of property followed by a long work session touching on several frequent topics.
The Council gave second reading to and approved an ordinance establishing a speed limit on Echols Drive. They discussed installing windows from Kudzu Millworks on the front of the small building where Fort Payne Main Street is re-locating to make it more energy efficient and will revisit the issue with price estimates. Council Member Phillip Smith said the airport committee reported that the complete repaving of the tarmac will be put off until August due to heavy traffic relating to flyers dropping their children off at the Mentone summer camps. ....

Ledbetter gives update on legislative matters

Alabama House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, clarified the status of a bill he introduced affecting future appointments to the board of directors of the Fort Payne Improvement Authority. He also offered his thoughts on bills concerning gambling and medical marijuana.
Ledbetter said he asked the Fort Payne City Council to consider a resolution supporting HB223 to expand terms on the FPIA board to six years and permit city council members to serve.
Ledbetter stated it was inaccurately reported that the bill had passed the House of Representatives and made its way to the Senate, but he said the measure is effectively killed in committee since two of the city council members, Phillip Smith and John Smith, voted against it at Fort Payneâs March 2 meeting. ....

DeKalb Regional Medical Center may expand senior psychiatric services

DeKalb Regional Medical Center seeks to secure funding to expand its senior care unit by up to 10 new beds, hospital Administrator Patrick Trammell recently shared in a conference call with state leaders.
Trammell thanked Dist. 8 State Sen. Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, and Alabama House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, for writing letters of support.
He said the hospitalâs psychiatry service is focused on geriatric patients, licensed for 19 beds and steadily operating on 18 beds.
âDemand over the years has been intense,â Trammell said. âThere have been many days when we have run up to our capacity.â
âWeâve started a process of requesting the state add 10 additional beds to our certificate of need as regulated in this planning region,â Trammell said. âWe did get unanimous approval from the statewide health coordinating council after that request and have received a letter from Gov. Kay Ivey to approve ....

Lawmakers updated on COVID-19 vaccine rollout

In a Wednesday conference call with Alabama House Majority Leader Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville, and Dist. 8 State Sen. Steve Livingston, R-Scottsboro, Community Affairs Director Carolyn Bern and Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) Area 5 Administrator Mary Gomillion gave an update on local rollout of new vaccines over the past month to halt the COVID-19 novel coronavirus.
Gomillion, who works in DeKalb County, said ADPH administered 882 doses this week through Wednesday, including 512 at a Jan. 18 drive-through vaccine clinic at the Northeast Alabama Agri-Business Center. Doses were given to people 75 and older who waited in line, inside the cars, after healthcare workers and first responders were served. Those people will return in four weeks for the second dose. Another 300 appointments were scheduled through Friday. ....

City receives grant to tear down old hospital

The process of demolishing the old DeKalb General Hospital is slowly making progress.
Fort Payne Mayor Brian Baine said the city received a $450,000 grant toward that goal. He was scheduled to meet today with Sara James, economic development and planning director with the Top of Alabama Regional Council on Governments (TARCOG), to determine what that money must be spent on as a requirement of receipt.
The hospital, located at the 1300 block of Forest Avenue in Fort Payne, has been cited as having multiple environmental hazards in addition to be generally regarded as an eyesore. It was built in 1950 and served as the countyâs hospital until 1986, then as a retirement community until 2003. It has sat vacant since 2013. ....
