THE EDITOR: Schools are failing to prepare students for their adult life. The modern education syllabus appears to be academia-centric, preferring to grow students towards university and specific job fields. However, it should be noted that this is not the path of every student. Meanwhile, what every student does have in common is the inevitability of having to navigate everyday adult life. Then why is there is little to no focus on this aspect in a student’s education?
According to a Red Cross survey, put forth by Alison McNulty, 59 per cent of deaths from injuries could have been preventable had first aid been given before primary responders arrived. With this staggering discovery, one must then ask why is it that first aid is not mandatorily taught in schools? ....

According to the Metro, the obstetrician and gynecologist passed following a battle with Covid-19.
Professor Jim Dornan from Northern Ireland was reportedly the chair of Fetal Medicine at
Queen’s University Belfast and
Health & Life Sciences at the
Ulster University.
He also gave lectures internationally on his work.
Following the news of his passing, tributes have begun flooding in from those who respected the work he did as a doctor and professor.

Weir to bring draft bill to NI Assembly to change age children start school

The Education Minister is to bring a draft bill to the NI Assembly in an attempt to change legislation over what age children must be to start their school life.
The draft bill is aimed at legislating for some children born prematurely, and those who are ‘summer born’, to benefit from delayed school starting.
And the move to allow children to start school a year later has been welcomed by Northern Ireland’s premature baby charity, TinyLife.
Peter Weir said the bill would be a major priority and is aiming to have it implemented by the end of the current Assembly term. ....

Education Minister Peter Weir wants to bring in a law allowing some children to defer starting primary school for a year.
Most children in Northern Ireland start school in the September of the school year after their fourth birthday.
That is one of the youngest primary school starting ages in Europe.
However, children whose birthdays fall between 2 July and 31 August start school in the September following their fifth birthday.
That means children can start primary school from ages ranging from four years two months to over five years old.
In many other European countries, however, children do not start formal primary school education until they are aged six or even seven. ....
