TAVARES – The Lake County Sheriff s office is firing a corrections officer after arresting and charging her with battery for allegedly slapping a handcuffed and shackled prisoner. The department investigated the criminal allegations against Alicia Hathaway that reportedly occurred during her Jan. 21 shift, following other officers’ report. The arrest warrant was issued Friday. Hathaway was booked in the same date without incident; her bond was $1,000. The Sheriff’s Office has started termination proceedings. Hathaway has been employed at the jail since March 2016. She has had no previous disciplinary actions. An incident report said Hathaway got into an argument with inmate Destiny Whitaker. Hathaway was trying to arrange two permitted audio-visual calls for her when Whitaker disobeyed orders to stay downstairs on a bench. ....
A corrections officer who witnessed the incident said Alicia Hathaway, who’s worked at the jail since March 2016, slapped the inmate during a Jan. 21 shift after the inmate cursed at her, the agency said. ....
