Softbank leads $83 mln investment in Brazil education startup Descomplica

SAO PAULO, Feb 18 (Reuters) - A group of investors led by Softbank Group has invested 450 million reais ($83 million) in Brazilian test-prep startup Descomplica, which has seen demand for its online learning services surge in the pandemic, the company said on Thursday.
Descomplica said it would use the funds to make acquisitions and develop new products, including 33 new courses by next year.
“We want to create the biggest university in Brazil, quickly reaching 1 million students with a 100% digital model,” said Marco Fisbhen, Descomplica’s founder and chief executive.
Brazil’s biggest education group, Cogna Educação SA , had just under 820,000 students enrolled in its Kroton higher education division at the end of September, according to quarterly earnings. ....

Brazil's maritime service firm Oceanpact completes $227 mln IPO

SAO PAULO, Feb 10 (Reuters) - Brazil maritime services provider Oceanpact Servicos Maritimos has concluded a 1.22 billion reais ($226.51 million) initial public offering, according to a securities filing on Wednesday.
Oceanpact priced the offer at 11.15 reais per share, at the bottom limit of the indicative range of up to 13.85 reais per share.
The company raised 920 million reais in the offering, aimed at expanding its fleet of boats and buying other equipment, while shareholders sold about 300 million reais in shares. ($1 = 5.3860 reais) (Reporting by Aluisio Alves Writing by Jake Spring Editing by Chris Reese) ....

UPDATE 1-Brazil trucker group urges 800,000 members to join strike

SAO PAULO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - A nationwide Brazilian truckers strike gathered momentum on Tuesday as a key oil worker union lent its support to the upcoming action that could cripple the country’s economy, which is still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.
Brazil’s National Confederation of Transport and Logistics Workers (CNTTL) on Tuesday urged its 800,000 members to join a Feb. 1 trucker strike led by the National Association of Autonomous Transporters of Brazil (ANTB). Later, the Federação Única dos Petroleiros (FUP) union said it, too, backed the move.
A similar nationwide strike three years ago paralyzed Brazil and sent shockwaves through its economy. Although it remains to be seen how widely the industrial action will be, a major strike would be a hammer-blow to Brazil’s economy. ....
