Brazilian workers stage strikes and protests against COVID-19 pandemic and social crisis

Brazilian workers stage strikes and protests against COVID-19 pandemic and social crisis
Workers have staged strikes and protests across Brazil against the murderous, uncontrolled spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and the ensuing social crisis that has driven tens of millions into poverty.
The weeks-long strikes by teachers in São Paulo against deadly school reopenings are being joined by a growing number of work stoppages by bus drivers, oil and railway workers, delivery app workers and other sectors as Brazil has recorded nearly 14 million coronavirus infections and a staggering 375,000 deaths.
Bus drivers have staged work stoppages in a number of state capitals. While the National Confederation of Transportation and Logistics Workers (CNTTL) union has sought to isolate these struggles, it has been forced to call a nationwide “health strike” today. ....

Logistics union warns of strike action against 'creeping culture' of fire and rehire

LOGISTICS workers will use strike action if needed to defend pay and conditions against bosses’ “creeping culture” of fire-and-rehire tactics, the Unite union pledged today.
Warning that shop stewards across the distribution and retail sectors were reporting attempts by employers to “salami slice” pay and conditions, blaming “market conditions,” the union signalled its intention to draw “a line in the sand” against the practice.
Unite reps at a number of companies, including Argos, Eddie Stobart, the Co-op, Gist, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Wincanton, were concerned at the proliferation of “fire and rehire” proposals, the union said.
And it pledged to support workers defending hard-won pay and conditions, including with industrial action if needed. ....

Corn Futures Touch Fresh 7-Year High on Roaring China Demand

Corn Futures Touch Fresh 7-Year High on Roaring China Demand
Bloomberg

Kim Chipman and Nicholas Larkin
(Bloomberg) Corn prices in Chicago reached a seven-year high with China’s appetite for the grain stoking global supply concerns.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Wednesday unveiled corn export sales to China of 680,000 tons, as well as 132,000 tons of soybeans. That’s on top of a 1.36-million-ton corn export sale to China reported Tuesday, marking the Asian country’s largest one-day purchase from the U.S. since July.
China is buying up record amounts of American corn to feed a hog herd recovering from African swine flu. The purchasing spree has rocketed the crop to multiyear highs, raising concerns about higher food prices. Money managers have been betting on a rally, with bullish wagers on corn near the highest in a decade. ....

UPDATE 1-Brazil trucker group urges 800,000 members to join strike

By Reuters Staff
(Adds oil workers union)
SAO PAULO, Jan 26 (Reuters) - A nationwide Brazilian truckers strike gathered momentum on Tuesday as a key oil worker union lent its support to the upcoming action that could cripple the country’s economy, which is still reeling from the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.
Brazil’s National Confederation of Transport and Logistics Workers (CNTTL) on Tuesday urged its 800,000 members to join a Feb. 1 trucker strike led by the National Association of Autonomous Transporters of Brazil (ANTB). Later, the Federação Única dos Petroleiros (FUP) union said it, too, backed the move.
A similar nationwide strike three years ago paralyzed Brazil and sent shockwaves through its economy. Although it remains to be seen how widely the industrial action will be, a major strike would be a hammer-blow to Brazil’s economy. ....
