Rhode Island, Maryland, New Hampshire: Battery storage emerges in US' lesser-heralded states

By:
Andy Colthorpe
There are perhaps four or five US states which have become prolific in their deployment of battery energy storage systems. The growth of large-scale battery systems in places like California, Hawaii, Texas, Arizona and New York might naturally form the bulk of our US project news coverage here at
Energy-Storage.news, but it’s also interesting to hear about what’s happening in regions where that development is still at an earlier stage.
One example is the steady proliferation of batteries paired with renewable generation in states that have long relied on coal. As that era of coal dominance looks set to end, driven as much by economics as any environmental policies, in the last year or so we’ve heard about huge hybrid resources projects of that type in Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Indiana along with smaller projects in Kansas and Ohio. ....

Study: 360 acres of forest cleared for solar in R.I.
Tree clearing for solar development, such as the Green Development farm pictured here under construction off Iron Mine Hill Road, has sparked concerns from policy groups and researchers. (Courtesy of Tim Forcier)
NORTH SMITHFIELD – A Clark University professor working to quantify the amount of solar development in Rhode Island found that 740 acres have been developed for solar power, nearly half of it on previously forested land.
John Rogan is a geography professor in the Worcester university’s Graduate School of Geography. His previous work includes mapping elephants in Africa and mining installations in Peru. ....

Former longtime state legislator wins seat on powerful utilities board

PROVIDENCE Former Senate Majority Leader John “Jack” Ravens is set to take a seat on the state Public Utilities Commission after winning confirmation Tuesday.
Despite the opposition of some senators who argue that Revens lacks the experience in energy and utilities issues that would qualify him for the $139,000-a-year position, his appointment was all but assured after he secured the support of Senate President Dominick Ruggerio and other members of Senate leadership.
Indeed, it was two members of the leadership team Majority Leader Michael McCaffrey and Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin who spoke in support of Revens before the 29-to-9 vote in favor of his appointment to the commission that sets electric, gas and water rates in Rhode Island and implements state energy policies. ....

Public Hearing on solar ordinance changes

The Town of New Shoreham will conduct a public hearing on proposed changes to the zoning ordinances on solar energy systems on Monday, Feb.1, at 7 p.m.
Solar technology has evolved in many ways over the years what was once an oddity on the roof or in the yard of a neighbor is becoming commonplace.
Block Island has slowly but surely embraced solar technologies over the years and the momentum continues with the help of the Block Island Solar Initiative and entrepreneurs like resident Chris Warfel of Entech Engineering.
Realizing the power that comes from their roofs, residents whose solar systems produced more power than they could use were able to get credit on their power bills through a program called net metering. The program is limited by the state of Rhode Island such that connected systems do not exceed three percent of the peak output of the local power utility during any given year. The peak for Block Isla ....
