Lawsuit filed a year ago argues that officer could have used de-escalation tactics

The family of a man fatally shot by a police officer in Silver Spring in 2018 sued Montgomery County more than a year ago, arguing that the officer could have de-escalated the situation, knowing that the man had a disability.
Since last summer, there has been no movement in the case.
Officer Anand Badgujar fatally shot 41-year-old Robert White in June 2018 following a confrontation in White’s neighborhood.
Badgujar has said he thought White was armed because he reached into his pocket. The officer also thought that White might be trying to intentionally provoke him in a “suicide-by-cop” scenario. ....

Commissioners are considering what data to use for redistricting and whether voters want to get rid of single-member districts, which were approved in 2018.
After redrawing districts ahead of the 2020 election, the Sarasota County Commission is again discussing moves that could affect the way residents vote.
Commissioners on April 20 had preliminary discussions about how to best redraw district lines after the 2020 census data is released and asked the Charter Review Board to review and potentially repeal the county’s single-member districts.
This year, the U.S. Census Bureau delayed the release date of data that local municipalities use to redraw political districts from March to September. ....

The Commissioners of St. Mary’s County held their first regular business meeting of 2021 Tuesday, Jan. 5, in the Chesapeake Building in Leonardtown.
The first item on the agenda was a request from Bill Hunt, Director of Land Use and Growth Management, for amendments to the Comprehensive Plan, the Comprehensive Water and Sewerage Plan and the Resolution to allow Sewer Service in the Sewer Service Area of the Expanded St. Clements Shores Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Commissioners approved the amendments.
The Commissioners also held two public hearings during the meeting, first soliciting community input on the disposition of county-owned surplus real property. County Attorney David Weiskopf briefed the Commissioners on the status of recommendations associated with the request. The Commissioners received no public input during the Hearing but will continue to accept input via email, phone or video submission until Jan. 12, 2021. ....
